Should You Play Big Bass Halloween Slot?

Here's the deal...Big Bass Halloween is nothing exceptional, but it turned out to be better than expected. My first thought was that it would be just another fish-themed slot with the usual Halloween twist. And, even though it is, Pragmatic Play popped in just enough ghastly moments, such as the creepy fisherman with hooks and the zombified-looking playing cards, to make it worthwhile!

What I Like & Don't Like About Big Bass Halloween

In order to remain unbiased in my reviews, I always like to mention both the good points and the not-so-good points of what I am reviewing. Here's what I think so far:

  • 🤑 Free spins that can be upgraded and collect multipliers
  • 👻 A great spooky theme that is perfect for a scare
  • 😍 Has the classic Big Bass Bonanza gameplay
  • ❌ Can be seen as one of those regular Halloween slots that offers nothing new
  • 😥 RTP ranges are fairly limited

My First Moments Playing This Slot Machine

I finally plucked up the courage to reel in fish and frights, and I can tell you, straight up, that I was not disappointed! The humour kicks in right from the home screen, where the typically friendly fisherman menacingly waves a large, sharp hook alongside the phrase, 'Something wicked this way swims!'

This line cleverly references Ray Bradbury's dark fantasy novel 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', which was later adapted into a movie by Walt Disney, surprisingly enough. The phrase actually has even older roots, originating from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', where one of the witches ominously says, 'By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes,' as Macbeth draws near. Not many people might be aware of this, but as a Shakespeare fanatic, I couldn’t resist sharing it with you!

In keeping with the Halloween theme, this game takes a darker turn than the original, with murky grey waters and a stormy sky, in stark contrast to the bright, sunny atmosphere of 'Big Bass Bonanza', this slot's rethemed version.

The first thing I noticed is that, compared to the original game, the RTP has dropped slightly. However, it still sits at a solid 96.06%, which isn't too bad either. Whether you're spinning for as little as 10p/c or going big with bets up to $/€240 per spin, that percentage stays the same.

You also get the option to buy the free spins feature for 100x your stake, which is pretty tempting if you're feeling lucky. Plus, there’s an ante bet feature that lets you bump your stake by 50% for a better shot at landing those scatter symbols.

Overall, I'd give Big Bass Halloween a 4 out of 5—it’s a medium-high volatility slot with 5 reels, 3-row setup and 10 paylines to keep things interesting.

Design That Screams Fishy and Spooky

When you first load up Big Bass Halloween, you're greeted with a pretty eerie welcome screen. The fisherman from the previous Big Bass games is back, but this time he’s giving off some serious creepy vibes. He’s wearing a black raincoat and holding a massive fish hook, all set against a dark, stormy sky. It’s not exactly bone-chilling, but it definitely sets the Halloween mood.

Once you're in the game, it’s like the usual Big Bass fishing trip, but everything feels darker and more ominous. The water is murky and grey, and the sky matches, adding to the haunted atmosphere. Even the symbols are revamped to fit the Halloween theme. The lower-paying card royals are all bloody and stitched up, while the fish, hook, lifebuoy, and tackle box have blood splattered on them. The dragonfly from the earlier Big Bass has been replaced by a raven, now covered in blood, too. It’s spooky in a fun way, definitely a nice Halloween twist.

Big Bass Spooky Symbols Coming Your Way

In Big Bass Halloween, the symbols are split between five lower-paying 10-A card ranks and higher-paying icons like tackle boxes, ravens, hooks, and lifebuoys. There’s also a bunch of fish symbols in different sizes, keeping with the underwater theme. These fish act as regular paying symbols in the base game, but during free spins, they take on a whole new role, which I’ll get into later.

One of the key symbols in the free spins round is the fisherman symbol, who acts as the Wild. He can substitute for any of the regular symbols to help complete winning combinations. But the real fun starts when he shows up alongside the fish - that’s when the true Big Bass magic treat kicks in. Anything and everything can happen!

Let's Talk about the Bonus Games You'll Find

In Big Bass Halloween, there are a couple of casino bonuses available, but the main action centres around the free spins bonus since the base game doesn’t offer much beyond your typical reel wins. But before I dive into my favourite part of the game, free spins, let’s talk about the Money Symbols:

Money Symbols

The fish symbols in the game don’t just act as regular paying symbols - they also display random cash values. These can range from 2x to as much as 2,000x your bet. During the free spins round, these values become collectible, which is where things get interesting.

Free Spins

If you land 2, 3, or 5 Scatter symbols during the base game, you’ll trigger the free spins feature with 10, 15, or 20 spins to start, depending on how many Scatters you hit. During the free spins, the fisherman Wild comes into play. When he lands at the same time as the fish symbols, he collects the cash values from each fish and adds them to your payout. If multiple fishermen land, they each collect the cash prizes separately, boosting your winnings.

The fisherman Wilds also serve another purpose - they’re collected in a meter above the reels during free spins. Every 4 fishermen collected upgrades the feature, giving you an additional 10 free spins and increasing the fisherman’s collection multiplier. First, it jumps to 2x, then 3x, and finally, a huge 10x at the third and final level. After that, retriggering isn’t possible.

There’s also a Dynamite modifier that can randomly activate during free spins. If a fisherman lands without any fish symbols, the game might add some fish to the reels at the end of the spin to increase your chances of a payout.

Overall, the free spins are where the real excitement lies in Big Bass Halloween, with those cash values, Wild fishermen, and level-ups giving you plenty of opportunities for big wins!

Some Technical Considerations about Big Bass Halloween

The game runs on a medium-to-high volatility model, so it definitely has its risks. In terms of wins, I found they come up roughly every 7 spins, while triggering the free spins happens about once every 113 spins - so patience is key. That said, the potential payouts were a bit underwhelming for me. The max win is capped at 2,100x your stake, which is the same as the original Big Bass Bonanza, so nothing too exciting there.

What’s interesting is the RTP, which has shifted compared to the original game. There are three different RTP settings for Big Bass Halloween: 96.04%, 95.09%, and 94.09%. These are all lower than the first Big Bass Bonanza, which feels odd, especially since this game is mostly just a Halloween-themed reskin.

Why Do I Think Big Bass Halloween Stands Out?

So, did the Big Bass series really need another edition? Or, more accurately, another copy where the only change is a new theme? Honestly, probably not. We've had quite a few Big Bass games already, and this one definitely isn’t the most exciting. It’s basically the same game as the original, just with a Halloween makeover.

Aside from the spooky theme, there’s nothing fresh for the player here. In the end, it feels like there's not much reason to switch to Big Bass Halloween, and I imagine it’ll fade into the background once the Halloween buzz dies down. However, that being said, it's great fun to get into the Halloween celebration and, if you're organising a party or a slot event between friends, it won't hurt to have Big Bass Halloween on your list.
